Maxwell Golf Course is closing its doors for an undetermined amount of time.
This comes as the City of Abilene accepts bids for investors to purchase the course.
The parking lot for the Maxwell Golf Course was full of loyal patrons trying to get one more game in on the old course before the fairways closed. Maxwell is a municipal course owned by the City of Abilene that is now facing management changes as the city is currently receiving sealed bids for the purchase of the course.
The minimum bid starts for potential buyers at $1,330,000, but that price tag could go up, as course regular Raymond Blasingame explained.
“The equipment to run it was owned by the previous managers. If they haven’t lined up somebody, it’s going to take at least a year, I figure, for anybody who would want to run the course to get set up doing it. Unless they found an operating course management company, and then they’re going to want a lot of money from us,” Blasingame explained.

Many patrons of Maxwell Golf Course say they are now looking at courses outside of the city of Abilene to play in a pursuit of more affordable prices, but for golfers like Brad McCullough, letting go is easier said than done.
The former management will keep the fairways open until Tuesday, September 30, with the deadline for the bids for the Maxwell Golf Course being October 1.
Immediately after the end of the deadline, the bids will be read aloud in the city hall council chambers at 555 Walnut Street.
An item pertaining to the Maxwell Golf Course is expected to be added to the agenda for the next Abilene City Council meeting on October 9.
