Concho County Murder Suspect Committed to Mental Hospital

A man accused of shooting and killing two Concho County Sheriff's deputies has been committed to a mental hospital for treatment.

Jeffrey Nicholas, 32, was released at 6:32 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, after being booked on May 11, 2021. Court records filed within Tom Green County specify that he was released into the custody of another agency.

The Concho County District Clerk’s Office has confirmed that Nicholas was committed to Vernon State Hospital.

Nicholas was charged with two counts of capital murder of a police officer and one count of aggravated assault against a public servant after he allegedly fatally shot Concho County Deputies Samuel Leonard and Sgt. Stephen Jones on May 10, 2021.

A jury ruled earlier this year that Nicholas was incompetent to stand trial.
